Capt. James A Ross, USN (Ret.) of Fairfax, VA passed away on February 3, 2022.

Jim was born on April 5, 1939, in El Paso, TX. He grew up in Denver, CO where he was an active member of the Boy Scouts of America, earning the rank of Eagle Scout, and participated in the BSA Sea Scouts program. Jim graduated from the University of Colorado, Boulder in 1962 with Bachelor of Engineering degrees in Electrical Engineering and Applied Mathematics, and was commissioned as an officer in the U.S. Navy through the NROTC program.

Jim proudly served in the U.S. Navy Submarine Service for 29 years. After attending Submarine School, Nuclear Prototype Training, and Nuclear Power School he reported to the commissioning crew of the USS Ulysses S. Grant (SSBN 631) where he served as an instructor at the U.S. Naval Nuclear Power School, Mare Island, CA.

During a tour as Engineering Officer, USS James Monroe (SSBN 622), he was awarded the Navy Commendation Medal and Navy Achievement Medal. Jim also served on the staff of Commander in Chief, U.S. Pacific Fleet, as a member of the Nuclear Propulsion Examining Board, and as Executive Officer, USS Haddock (SSN 621). Following prospective Commanding Officer training, he served as the Tactical Systems Director of Submarine Group Two.

Jim established the USS New York City (SSN 696) pre-commissioning unit on May 2, 1977, and served as the first commanding officer of the USS New York City. After several tours of duty at the Pentagon and PEO SCWS Washington, D.C., Jim retired on July 31, 1991 and was awarded the Legion of Merit Award.

Jim is survived by his wife, Miriam Ross of Fairfax, VA, brothers William Ross (Mary) of Arvada, CO and John Ross (Sandi) of Marietta, GA, sons James A Ross Jr (Kristi) of Broomfield, CO and Jonathan Ross, of Fairfax, VA, and grandsons Cole and Peter Ross.

In his free time, Jim enjoyed his annual ski trips with the Pentagon Ski Club, attending Capital Land Cruiser Club events with his FJ-40 LC, and spending time with his family. He volunteered his time to the Washington D.C chapter of the University of Colorado Alumni Association and was a member of Lord of Life Lutheran Church in Fairfax, VA. He gave generously of his time and financial resources to his church and charitable organizations which were important to him.

A celebration of life will be held at Lord of Life Lutheran Church in Fairfax, VA on Saturday, May 21, 2022 at 1:00 PM ET, with a reception to follow.

Interment will be held at Arlington National Cemetery.
