John "Jack" James Gregory , 85 of Swansea, passed away peacefully after complications from COVID on Friday, January 28 at home with his family by his side.

Born and raised in Fall River, he was the son of George B. Gregory and Bertha K. Gregory. He was also the brother of the late George Gregory, Jr.

He was the beloved husband of Lorna L. (Taylor) Gregory to whom he was married for 65 years.

He was a graduate of Durfee High School, class of 1954. At Durfee, he participated in many sports. He lettered in football and track and also played basketball, baseball and softball and received many awards for bowling.

John enlisted in the U.S. Air Force in 1956 after serving in the National Guard for two years. After basic training, he graduated at the top of his class at Air Traffic Control school. John and Lorna married in Fall River in 1957 and were stationed in England for three years. He served as an air traffic controller at an SAC airbase, where his primary responsibility was talking down aircraft to land in bad weather, using radar.

Upon leaving the Air Force, he was employed as a quality control lab technician at Globe Mfg. in Fall River. He began attending Bristol Community College in 1969 as a full-time day student while working full time at night. He graduated summa cum laude in Accounting from both BCC and Southeastern Massachusetts University (now UMASS Dartmouth), always attending college full time days while working full time at night and weekends. He received the President's award, the Sceptre and Scroll for Leadership as a student at BCC. He continued his education at the University of Rhode Island and achieved a Masters Degree in Administration of Adult Education. As a college administrator, he was an advocate of college Student Government. He served for several years as the head of the Board of Trustees for a nationwide organization of student governments. As such, he coordinated national conferences at New Orleans, Springfield, MA and Providence, RI. He attended many conferences nationwide, from Boston to Los Angeles.

He retired from Bristol Community College in 1999 after serving 26 years as Director of Administrative Services and, upon retirement, he continued as an instructor of Accounting for 4 years.

He was a member of Touisett Country Club and was awarded a lifetime honorary membership in the Touisett Mens' Golf Association for his work on the Board of Governors. He also participated in running the Tuesday night golf league for almost 40 years.

In addition to his wife, John is survived by a son, Brian Gregory (wife Cynthia Sullivan) of Boxford, MA, a daughter, Lynn Nahas (husband Ron) of Swansea, three granddaughters Meaghan Sheedy of Swansea, Alison O'Kane of Tiverton, RI and Caitlin Smith of Beverly, MA, six great-grandchildren Logan, Alayna, Tenley, Jack, Aubrey, Connor, and brother-in-law Robert E. Taylor of Oregon.

Calling hours for John will take place on Wednesday February 2, 2022 from 5-7 PM in the Hathaway Community Home for Funerals 900 Buffinton Street, Somerset. His funeral service will take place on Thursday, February 3, here in the funeral home at 10 AM. Burial will be private.
