Laura A. Pfeiffer, of Columbia, Maryland died Sept. 21, 2006, at Brighton Gardens Assisted Living in Columbia. She was 89.

She was born July 27, 1917, in Ellicott City, to Jacob I. and Annie L. Grimes Makinson.

She worked as a clerk for 20 years for the Columbia City Building post office.

Following retirement, she took classes at Howard Community College for a year, studying literature and art. She also was enrolled in piano lessons.

Mrs. Pfeiffer enjoyed volunteering, and was active in the Women's Civic Club of Howard County, now defunct, during the 1950s and 60s. That same committee was instrumental in bringing the YMCA to the area and she was a participant during that time. In the 1980s, she volunteered with Hospice of Howard County, formerly called Omega.

She was predeceased by husbands, William F. Kirkwood Jr., and William E. Pfeiffer; a son, William F. Kirkwood III; and a daughter, Blanche J. Sanchez.

She is survived by a daughter, Laura K. Kirkwood, of Columbia; a son, John Pfeiffer, of Relay; a brother and sister-in-law, William F. and Maria Makinson, of Berkeley Springs, W.Va.; 11 grandchildren; and nine great-grandchildren.
