John was known for his outgoing personality and humor. He enjoyed making others laugh and could take a joke or prank as well as dish them out. One of his greatest joys was teasing his children, grandchildren, and great-grandchildren.
His outgoing personality led him to a career as a salesman, plant manager and later as a sales manager at numerous locations with Shoffner Industries, Inc. in Burlington, NC. He won numerous awards and trips for his sales achievements until he retired in 2000.
John and Ann built their dream home on his family homestead in Ossipee in 1984. He spent his retirement years enjoying gardening, tinkering in his workshop, remodeling the old homeplace and building houses on the land.
His grandsons and later the boyfriends of the granddaughters experienced his unique firm handshake. He was dearly loved by his children, grandchildren, and great-grandchildren.
He is survived by his wife of 62 years, Ann Shoffner Sutton, daughter, Susan Sutton Smith (husband, Barry), John Sutton, Jr. (wife, Lisa Young Sutton), Chris Sutton (wife, Lisa Fogelman Sutton), and Todd Sutton. He had 7 grandchildren and 10 great grandchildren. He was preceded in death by his parents, John & Lena Sutton, siblings Harold Sutton, Pauline Gross, Billie Benolken, Polly Wilson, surviving siblings are Gaynelle McCollum, Marjorie Foster, and Shelvia Russell.
A memorial service will be held at Fairview United Methodist Church, 3128 Osceola Rd., Elon, NC. on Saturday, February 12, 2022. Family will receive friends and family between 2:30-3:15pm and the memorial service will begin at 3:30pm.
