OBITUARY

MARY E McDONALD

Mary E. McDonald, age 96, of Lansdale, died peacefully Thursday morning, February 3, 2022 at Jefferson Lansdale Hospital. She was the wife of the late Gerald J. McDonald, who died in 2015, and with whom she shared 63 years of marriage.
Born in Williamsport, PA., she was the daughter of John C. and Martha (Blee) Zaner.
Mary was a 1943 graduate of Williamsport High School, the Williamsport Hospital School of Nursing, attended Lycoming College, and Syracuse University, Syracuse, NY where she met her husband and lived for many years. After her graduation from nursing school, Mary began her career in the Cadet Nurse Corps, during World War II, having narrowly missed deployment with the end of the war.
She was employed as a registered nurse with the former North Penn Hospital, as one of the first Intensive Care Unit nurses in the 1960's, later heading that unit for many years. She also held many other nursing positions throughout the years, until her retirement.
Mary was a long-time member of Gwynedd Square Presbyterian Church, located in Upper Gwynedd.
She remained an engaged and active learner throughout her life, and enjoyed many Elderhostel educational trips and travels. Mary also served as a poll worker in the North Penn area for many years. She learned to use a computer late in life, and remained connected on social media and texting family and friends. She was the loving emotional rock and center of her family. She will be missed by all who knew her kind and gentle soul.
Mary is survived by three children: Dr. John McDonald (Barbara) of Northampton, Susan Pitkow (Michael), of Hatfield, and Molly Mills (Richard) of Burbank, CA. She was preceded in death by daughter Kathleen Jones (Wesley) of Iowa. She is also survived by four grandchildren, Matthew (Ashley) McDonald, Michael McDonald, Jonathan and Erin Pitkow, and one great-grandchild, Wickham McDonald.
Funeral services will be arranged by Huff and Lakjer Funeral Home, Inc., located in Lansdale, PA, with arrangements announced at a later date. Interment will be following at Washington Crossing National Cemetery, located in Newtown, PA.
