Charles William Edwards

November 24, 1945 - February 21, 2022

On Monday, February 21st, 2022, loving Husband, Father and great friend to many, Charles William Edwards, (nicknames: Charlie, Wozzy, and Pop), passed away at Yuma Regional Medical Center in Yuma, Arizona.

Born on November 24, 1945, in Yuma, Arizona, to a Pentecostal Christian family, Charles was the son of Pastor John and Elnora Edwards. John and Elnora were well-respected active members in the community, managing a church with a cafeteria, and benefiting the Carver Park neighborhood with ministry, delicious BBQ and baked goods.

This would later shine through Charles, paving the way for his hallmark friendliness, kindness, and warmth towards others, as well as becoming the BBQ expert for his much-coveted ribs, chicken and sauce.

The youngest of five children, Charles was raised in a home on Magnolia Avenue where he made several life-long friends.

Charles attended both Carver and Pecan Grove Elementary School, and Fourth Avenue Junior High School. A loyal Criminal, Charles attended Yuma High School, graduating with the class of 1964.

While Charles adamantly defended his skill as a football player, rather than pursuing a career in football, he chose to be the lead singer of a band.

Spanning the 60s and 70s, The Torquays (later called Charles and The Fabulous Torquays) were Yuma's number one soul and rock band, covering hit songs from the likes of James Brown, Smokey Robinson, and Chuck Berry. Original members of the band were brothers Alfonso and Gilbert Varela, Joaquin Jack Otero (bass), Richard Barriga (drummer and keyboard), Bobby Evaro and Charles was the adored front man. They played on many stages throughout Yuma and out of town gigs, being the main attraction at dances, anniversaries and nightclubs.

Charles had a passion for beautiful cars, and fittingly, he went to work for Bill Alexander Ford in 1971. Charles retired in 2018, after 47 years dedicated service.

During his early years at Ford, a beautiful woman caught his eye and held his heart. They married in 1992. Juanita Jenny Correa, would give birth to the couples three children: Charles Jr, Stephanie, and Andre. Charles and Juanita were devoted to one another for the remainder of his life.

Charles is survived by his mother, Elnora; his loving and devoted wife, Juanita (Jenny); daughter, Stephanie Edwards (Clayton) Williams; sons Charles (Zenia) and Andre Edwards; grandchildren Xena & Xavier Edwards, and Aaniyah Miles; sisters Lenora Nancy Edwards Boykins and Sarah Lannie Edwards Barber; brothers John Edwards, Jr., Frank Edwards, and SheryLee Edwards.

Charles has an extensive group of proud and grateful family members and friends who all were blessed to know him. He truly was a great friend to many. We will never forget his loving ways and genuineness.

Viewing will be Thursday, March 17th, 2022 from 5 p.m. for family.

Friends and family are invited to greet the family from 6 p.m. to 8 p.m. at Yuma Mortuary & Crematory, 775 S Fifth Ave, Yuma, AZ 85364.

Funeral services will be Friday, March 18th, 2022 at 9:00 a.m. at Yuma Mortuary & Crematory. A graveside service will immediately follow at Desert Lawn Memorial Park,1415 S First Ave, Yuma, AZ 85364.
