Mattie Laura Cooke Ball, age 89, of Newton, passed away on Saturday, May 11, 2019 at Abernethy Laurels. Born April 26, 1930 in Catawba County, NC, she was the daughter of the late William Hampton Cook and Ella Heffner Cook.

Mattie was a member at Trinity Baptist Church. She was a loving mother and grandmother who will be deeply missed. She was a cashier at Twin City supermarket and Harris Teeter grocery store.

In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her husband, David Calvin "DC" Ball, Sr.; daughter, Deborah Ball Thonen; 5 brothers; and 2 sisters.

Survivors include her sons, David Calvin Ball, Jr. of Ft. Mill, SC, Keith Hampton Ball and wife, Ericka, of Hickory NC; daughters, Becky Ball Stoker and husband, Kerry of Newton, NC, Sylvia Henshaw of Dahlonega, GA; brother, Glenn Cooke and wife, Billie Mae of Denver, NC; 12 grandchildren and numerous great-grandchildren.

A funeral service will be held at 2:00 p.m. on Wednesday, May 15, 2019 in the Chapel of Drum Funeral Home in Conover, with Dr. Ed Yount officiating. The burial will follow at Eastview Cemetery in Newton. The family will receive friends at the funeral home prior to the service from 12:45 p.m. to 1:45 p.m.
