James was a music lover and played guitar throughout his life. He loved Blues and Rock-and-Roll music and had a large vinyl record collection. In the 1960s he spent time living in California, playing in rock bands and experiencing the music scene of that era. He was a great story-teller, making up many bedtime stories for his children. He also greatly enjoyed sharing science fiction novels and other books with his children, reading them such epics as The Lord of the Rings every night. He was always quick with a joke and conversed with strangers easily, which lent itself well to his sales career. He did extensive genealogic work on his family tree, tracing his family's roots through Rochester and beyond. He took his children on many outdoor adventures including canoeing, hiking through the woods, and fossil-hunting. He was a lover of dogs and told many fond stories of them, including his dog Chad, who he called "the wonder-dog."
