Bill was born in Sparta and spent his entire life in this town he loved whole-heartedly. Following high school, Bill briefly entered the workforce before serving as a Tech Sergeant in the 79th Construction Engineers in the Korean War. He was proud of his military service and touched when recognized with a Badger Honor Flight to Washington DC.
Bill had an admirable work ethic and was employed at a variety of places including Sparta Brush Company, Quandahls Cabinets, and the VA. Following retirement, Bill pursued his interest in woodworking, and enjoyed sharing his talents as "Wild Bill's Coulee Crafts."
Bill was known for his support of Sparta sports and followed all Wisconsin sports teams through his final days. Bill had a gentle presence and exemplified a life of simple joys. He found happiness in watching birds, sitting in the gazebo, and always loved animals. He sang folk songs, shared stories of the "wild west," and was rarely without a crossword or jigsaw puzzle.
Bill's greatest love, however, was for his family. He was fiercely proud of his children, grandchildren, and great grandchildren, and was invested in our every accomplishment or hardship. Most significantly, his marriage of 67 years was a gift to all who witnessed this love–a testament to devotion, faithfulness, and gratitude.
Bill is survived by his wife Phyllis, children Gayla (Bob) Holzem of Baraboo, David Roberts of Sparta, and Sonja (Todd) Penner of Madison. He is also survived by five grandchildren: Emily (Jason) Moll, Betsy (Clayton) McCaulley, Andrew Roberts, Jennifer Roberts, and Bobby Penner; and eight great grandchildren: William, Benny, Ikey, Charlie and Henry Moll, and John, Davey, and Joey McCaulley.
Bill was preceded in death by his parents, William and Christine Roberts, sister Arlys Clumpner, and nephew Ron Rohn.
