Died in the shipwreck "Happy Home"
Early in 1881, under the command of Captain Coalfleet, while she was bound from Hamburg for Saint John in ballast, she struck Trinity Ledge at 6 p.m. on January 3. She soon pounded a hole in her bottom came off the ledge and capsized about 10 p.m. All hands were lashed to the mizzen (third mast) rigging as the seas swept repeatedly over the wreck. The cook perished at midnight (having lost his jacket while attempting to dive and cut the ropes securing the boat). The captain's nine-year old daughter died at 1 a.m. and his wife died at 4 a.m. Their bodies were taken off the next morning, frozen and encased in ice. The captain and crew of eleven men were saved by a dory from shore. The Happy Home subsequently went ashore at Black Point, near Yarmouth, lay over on her broadside, where she was stripped of anything reusable, a total loss
