Mr. Howard Wendell Clark, age 81, of Rome, GA, passed away unexpectedly on Friday, February 25, 2022.
A native of Floyd County, GA, Howard was born in Shannon, GA, on July 18, 1940, son of the late Harley Clark and the late Emma Mae Holbert Clark. He was also preceded in death by his first wife, Frankie Ann Davis Clark, to whom he was married on September 12, 1964, until her death on January 31, 2010, by his granddaughter, Ava Mae Freeman, by his sister, Barbara Clark Green, and by two nephews, Tony McFarland and Scotty Clark.
Mr. Clark was a 1958 graduate of Model High School. Following graduation, Howard joined the Navy where he served for four years before being honorably discharged. He then worked for General Electric in the dry room for many years until his retirement in 1997. He was a lifelong member of New Antioch Baptist Church in Shannon, GA.
Howard was a humble and generous soul who loved being outdoors. Leading by example, he instilled in his children the virtues of acceptance, fairness and love of the Lord. Before Google, Howard could "figure" his way to build most anything, from rabbit boxes to decorative rock walls. Whether trout fishing in Arkansas, bear hunting in Canada or just "piddlin" in the yard, he was most happy being in nature. Mere words will never be enough to describe "Papa", but as a friend recently pointed out, "he was one of the good ones."
Survivors include his wife, Joyce Winter Clark, to whom he was married on June 16, 2012; 2 daughters and sons-in-law, Kellie and Mike Curry, Rome, and Kacie and Kyle Freeman, Rome; their children, Lily Curry (Ryan) Haley, Ruth Ann Freeman, Frank Curry, and John Kyle Freeman; 2 step-children and spouses, John and Stacey Winter, Heflin, AL, and Natalie and Jason Flurry, Woodstock; and their children, Chandler Flurry, Salee Kennedy, Ansley Winter (Michael) Myrick, Matthew (Rachel) Flurry, Saxon Kennedy, David Flurry, Saige Kennedy, Wesley Winter and Liam Flurry; brother and sister, Sherman (Betty Jean) Clark, Carolyn Venable, Ronnie (Dana) Clark and David (Judy) Clark; sister-in-law, Betty Mathis Montague; many nieces and nephews.
Due to his lifelong church being in the process of remodeling, funeral services will be held at Friendship Baptist Church, 2293 Calhoun Rd., NE, Rome, GA 30161, at 1pm on Tuesday, March 8, 2022, with the Rev. Tony Cargle officiating and Howard's son-in-law, Kyle Freeman, delivering the eulogy. Interment will follow in East View Cemetery with the Rev. Tracy Hardy officiating.
The family will receive friends from 5pm until 7pm on Monday, March 7, 2022, at Friendship Baptist Church.
Pallbearers are to assemble by 12:30 pm on Tuesday at Friendship Baptist Church and include: Frank Curry, John Kyle Freeman, Ronnie Clark, David Clark, Mike Curry and Kyle Freeman.
Henderson & Sons Funeral Home, South Chapel, has charge of funeral arrangements.
