Mary Jane Lane

Augusta - Mary Jane (Althouse) Lane, 82, passed away peacefully following a brief illness on Sunday, February 27, 2022, after struggling with dementia for many years.
Mary was born June 5, 1939, the fourth child of Jacob and Stella Althouse, and grew up in Pennsylvania. Following graduation from Lebanon High, Mary enlisted in the U.S. Air Force and was ultimately stationed in New York. There she met and married the love of her life, Donald Lane, in 1959. Following discharge, the two returned to Maine, Don's home state, and settled in Waterville, where Mary and Don made their home for the rest of their lives. They raised two children and were very supportive of all their children's activities. Mary worked various jobs once the kids were in school, salesperson at Sterns department store, nursery schoolteacher and office work for the state YMCA among them. As time passed Mary and Don became very supportive grandparents, attending all the athletic and extracurricular activities which their granddaughters participated in that they could.
Once their grandchildren were in college and Don had retired, they were enthusiastic supporters of all local sports teams and could be found on any given day on the sidelines of a soccer game, football game, or baseball game where Waterville, Winslow, Oakland, or Fairfield teams were competing.
The first time Mary was introduced to Maine lobster she is quoted as saying "I'm not eating one of those ugly things!" Don ruefully said later that he wished he hadn't coaxed her to try it because she came to love it, along with steamer clams. She loved drives to the coast to enjoy all Maine seafood; a favorite spot was Muscongus Bay Lobster in Round Pond.
Mary enjoyed the holidays and especially decorating the house and tree for Christmas, giving gifts, and the tradition of making lots of delicious treats for family and friends. She will be remembered by all for her opera fudge, a special recipe passed down from her great aunt Amy which each year could be found in a tin on the back porch; a piece or two was snuck by almost everyone visiting on their way through to the kitchen at Christmas time.
She was preceded in death by her parents, siblings, mother, brother and sister-in-law, several nieces and nephews and her husband of 54 years, Don, who died in 2013.
She is survived by daughter Rebecca Applebee and her husband Michael, son Robert, three granddaughters, Katie Dolinsky (Seth), Sarah Carson (Dustin), and Kayla Lane, three great grandchildren, several nieces, nephews, great nieces, and great nephews.
