Although best known for his role as 'Coach Ernie Pantusso' on "Cheers," Colasanto actually had more credits for directing television shows such as "Bonanza," "Starsky and Hutch," "Hawaii Five-O," and "Columbo." He also appeared in movies such as "Raging Bull" and Alfred Hitchcock's "Family Plot," and made guest appearances on many other TV shows throughout the 1960s and 70s. Born in Rhode Island, he was one of seven children. He left high school to join the Navy and served in World War II, earning two medals and an honorable service lapel button. After the war he came home to finish high school and then attended Bryant College, graduating in 1949. Colasanto originally intended to become an accountant, but after seeing Henry Fonda perform on Broadway, he turned to show business. Bryant College's class of 1985 honored Colasanto by dedicating a common room in one of the college buildings to him; the room, called "Nick's Place," is decorated with mementos of his career, including a tie and apron worn by Colasanto in his role as "Coach." The final episode of "Cheers" in which he appeared was called "Cheerio, Cheers," and aired on April 11, 1985.
