Olive was the daughter of Issac P. and Joanna (Gay) Carter. Her early childhood was spent in the District of Maine. In 1815, she moved to Ohio with her parents, stopping first in Perry County and then Franklin County, before making their home in Muskingum County. Being the eldest surviving girl in the family, she helped with family chores and had limited opportunities for education. Despite this, she became an apt scholar and wrote a memoir of her life but it was destroyed by fire before it was published. She spent for first part of her married life with William Heal while living in Muskingum County. In 1829, they moved their family to Delaware County, Indiana. Olive educated her childen and neighbor's children in their home until a school house was built on their property. A church was built on land adjoining theirs and it was named Olive Branch in her honor. The church is no longer there but Willaim and Olive are buried in the church's cemetery.
