Edwin Gordon Leavitt died February 27, 2022 at home in White River Junction, VT surrounded by his family. He was born at home in Wilder, VT on April 25, 1939, a son of Henry and Charlotte (Elliott) Leavitt.
Ed grew up in Wilder and graduated from Hartford High School in 1957 where he played several sports including as a pitcher on the baseball team. After graduation he began working for the Town of Hartford Highway Department while waiting to hear from several pro ball teams who were scouting him. Unfortunately, he had an accident, injuring his foot and was unable to play ball at the professional level and instead followed in the footsteps of his father and older brother into a career in law enforcement. Ed was married to Dorothy Benjamin in 1960 and they made a home on Taft's flat where they raised their family and have lived since.
Ed joined the Hartford Police Department in 1963 and served for nearly fifty years retiring in 2005 as Deputy Chief of Police and Acting Chief of Police. Following his retirement, he continued to serve part time for special details and as a fingerprinting technician until 2011. He had many memorable times during his time on the force including helping to provide security for President George H. W. Bush during a visit to Hartford.
Ed always kept in shape and enjoyed exercising either by, running, swimming, biking, hiking, weightlifting, or playing softball and especially enjoyed time with friends at softball tournaments. His favorite time of year was hunting season and every year he spent many hours in the woods. He also loved driving back roads looking for deer and over the years Ed saw countless deer and other wildlife. Most of all Ed enjoyed time with family including cookouts, vacations to Old Orchard Beach, ME, Lake George, NY and of course time in the woods, hunting with his son, Rick, and son-in-law, Wayne, as well as other close friends. He also enjoyed listening to country music and particularly enjoyed listening to his son's play music.
He also gave back to the community as often as he could through programs such as Kids and Cops and serving as a Hunters Safety Instructor for many years.
Ed's family appreciates the wonderful care given to him by Bayada Hospice especially by Jeannette and Gene, aides and all the nursing staff.
Ed was predeceased by a son Edwin R. "Eddie" Leavitt; his parents; brothers Henry and William Leavitt and sisters Janet Ford, June Gunzinger, Jean Leavitt, and Rachel Darrah.

A funeral service will be held at the Hartford High School with special escort by the Hartford Police Department. A Celebration of life will follow at the VFW in White River Jct.
