Betty Wetzel Anderson, 89, of Spotsylvania passed peacefully from this life into her Eternal Home on Saturday, February 26, 2022. Betty was born on July 31, 1932 in Waynesboro, Va., the youngest child to Peter and Dolly Wetzel.

She was brought up in a loving home with a strong German work ethic as her father had emigrated from Germany in 1908. In 1956, Betty married her husband, Vernon, on May 12 and settled in Waynesboro where they began their family. Both were active members of Lebanon Presbyterian Church and Betty sang in the choir for many years. In addition to being a homemaker, she also worked in the catalog department at Sears and Roebuck, taking catalog orders, which were taken by phone in those days.

Although Vernon and Betty both came from modest, if not humble, beginnings, they were no strangers to hard work and open to new opportunities. In 1976, Betty and Vernon set off for a great adventure with their children and moved their family to Fredericksburg where they founded Anderson Oil Company and Anderson Propane Service, companies that are still in business today.

Betty was an active member of her beloved First Christian Church for well over 40 years. She held many positions during that time including Deaconess, Church Trustee, Christian Women's Fellowship, and was an active member of the Fellowship Class, Visitation Team, Homecoming Committee and Homecoming Choir, and Music and Choir Robe Committee. Her favorite position was as a member of the church choir where she sang alto in group, soloist, and duets with other members. Betty also headed the choir loft renovation in memory of her husband, Vernon.

To know Betty was to know she was always singing and she would break out in song any time you were around her. She is now singing for her Savior, Jesus Christ.

Betty spent much of her time walking, reading her Bible, and she loved historical novels that told stories of different times and places. Her favorite place was with her family and friends, sitting on her porch overlooking the Chesapeake Bay at Gwynn's Island where she and Vernon spent much of their time. She looked forward to and enjoyed her weekly poker games with friends and gladly loved winning a hand and taking a nickel or two.

She and Vernon were great supporters of the University of Virginia Athletics, a tradition that has continued to this day.

Betty was faithful and loyal, giving unselfishly to her children and grandchildren. The legacy she leaves behind is one of faith, family, and love that will be remembered for years to come. To know her was to love her.

Betty is survived by her children, Lori Anderson, Van Anderson, Mark Anderson (Susan), Adrienne Leonarkis (Jorge); grandchildren, Courtney Leonarkis, Joseph Leonarkis, Eric Anderson, and Faith Anderson who affectionately called her Nanny; beloved sister, Lou Cook; and numerous nieces, nephews, and cousins.

Betty was preceded in death by her husband, Vernon Hamilton Anderson; grandson, Will Anderson; parents, Peter and Maude "Dolly" Wetzel; and siblings, Jean Falls and Bill Wetzel.

A Celebration of Life will be held at 11 a.m. on Thursday, March 3, 2022 at First Christian Church. The family will receive friends an hour prior to the service at the church. Interment will follow at 12 p.m. on Monday, March 7, 2022 in Oak Hill Cemetery. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to First Christian Church, 1501 Washington Avenue, Fredericksburg, VA 22401. Online guest book is available at covenantfuneralservice.com.
