Records indicate she was born in the area of the Red River Settlement, a part of Rupert's Land in British North America at the time, several years before the confederation of various territories to become Canada and a decade prior to the creation of the province of Manitoba.

Daughter of Pierre David Sutherland (1820 - 1870) and his wife Sara (nee McMillan, 1821 - 1882).

Married widower Louis Villebrun in Saint-Norbert in 1882. Together they would have at least 10 children.
