Robert Lee Holmes, 72, of Kearneysville, West Virginia, died at his home on Monday, December 27, 2021.

Mr. Holmes was born January 25, 1949 in Winchester, Virginia, son of the late William Travis Holmes and Rebecca Jane Doleman Holmes.

A veteran of the U. S. Marine Corps, LCPL rank from December 1968 - 1970 during the Vietnam Era. He earned the National Defense Service Medal, Vietnamese Service Medal with one Combat Action Ribbon, Vietnamese Cross of Gallantry with palm and received an honorable discharge December 5, 1974.

Brother Robert Holmes' affiliation and offices held in Masonry respectively; Mt. Pisgah Lodge #3: Past Master, Star Lodge #1: Senior Warden, Brothers of Harmony Lodge #42: Senior Warden, Past Master Holmes served as a member and officer of all three lodges of the First District. Brother Holmes served as the Grand Senior Deacon and was the current Grand Marshall of the Most Worshipful Prince Hall Grand Lodge F & AM Inc., Jurisdiction of West Virginia. He was a member of I.M. Carper 192 Consistory where he was the current 1st Lieutenant. He was a member of James S. Carper Council of Deliberation of the orient of West Virginia. He recently obtained the status of Grand Inspector General 33rd Degree in the Consistory of the Southern Jurisdiction.

He trained under the leadership of Master Lee in Mixed Martial Arts in Shepherdstown, WV. He also trained under Master Chang at Taekwondo in Ranson, WV, as a second-degree black belt. He was a member of American Legion post #102.

He had an extreme passion for pool and loved baseball and pitching horseshoes.

Robert was a hard worker being employed by Dupont as a Machine Operator in Front Royal, VA, CSX Railroad as a Railroad Machinist in Martinsburg, WV and finally retired from VA Medical Center as a housekeeper.

Surviving are his four daughters, Carla Holmes of Wilmington, NC, Rochelle Marshall of Stafford, VA, Ivy Brown-Tyson of Winchester, VA, and Stacey Gause of Orlando, FL; and step-son, Adam Ashley; two sisters, Cecelia Newman of Winchester, VA and Marilyn Holmes Paige of Berryville, VA; two brothers, Lowell Holmes of Martinsburg, WV and Humphrey Ezekiel Holmes of Charles Town, WV; eight grandchildren and a host of nieces and nephews. He was preceded in death by his father, William Travis Holmes and mother, Rebecca Holmes, also his brothers, William P. Holmes, William Scott "Silky" Jackson and Michael Pifer and one sister, Gwendolyn Holmes Underwood.

A funeral service will be held at 11:00 A.M Friday, January 7, 2022 at Enders & Shirley Funeral Home Chapel in Berryville, VA, with Pastor Lawrence Wilson, Jr. officiating. Burial will follow in Locust Grove Cemetery, Franklintown, WV.

Military honors will be provided by the Clarke County Honor Guard.
