Robert V. "Robin" Holland, Jr, passed away Tuesday, February 8, 2022, in Houston, Texas. By his side was his beloved girlfriend, Lorry Harju and his daughter, Kristen Hale. Robin was born on December 3, 1946, to Polly and Bob Holland in San Angelo, Texas. From a young age, Robin had a love for family, friends, UT football, cooking, horses, rodeo sports and the western way of life. Robin attended Robert Lee High School, where he played football, basketball, track, and baseball, as well as a member of FFA where he showed steer and hogs. At The University of Texas, where he majored in chemical engineering and political science, he was a member of Phi Kappa Psi fraternity. He then went on to graduate from The University of Houston Law School. During this time and throughout childhood, he spent many breaks in Red River, NM with his family where he developed a passion for snow skiing. He became a ski instructor and had the honor of teaching Lyndon Johnson's daughters to ski. He was married to his childhood sweetheart, Dona Gurtler Holland, for 30 years. They were blessed with one child, a daughter, Kristen.
Over the years, Robin joined many organizations. His love for the western way of life was embodied in his affiliations with two organizations that touched his heart deeply. He loved the Houston Livestock Show & Rodeo and its educational mission for the youth of Texas. During his 35 years of service, he served on the swine auction committee, commercial exhibits committee and was a founding member of the Legal Advisory committee, as well being appointed to the Board of Directors in 1991. In 2015, he was honored to be elected as a Lifetime Director of "The Show" in recognition of his commitment to the organization. His involvement in HLSR extended to the BBQ cookoff, where he was able to express his culinary skills. His team "Arnold Ziffel Memorial Mobile BBQ Corps" began in 1980 and is entering its 43rd year. During Robin's involvement, they won Reserve Grand Champion brisket, finalist 5 times, and Grand Champion Bloody Mary.
Robin was accepted into The Tejas Vaquero Maverick Class of 1992 and made member in 1995. In Vaqueros and his Cojer Para Arriba Camp, he established true friendships that lasted until his passing. His love for the "Cowboy Way of Life" was part of his core being as he believed the values of integrity, hard work, and delivering on promises made were what defined a man.
He built a thriving law practice, being Board Certified in Civil Trial as well as Personal Injury Trial Law. He was licensed in the Federal Court for the Southern District of Texas, the 5th Circuit Court of Appeals and the United States Supreme Court. He was involved in the Houston Bar Association, American Bar Association, Houston Trial Lawyers Association and Texas Trial Lawyers Association, serving as director. He was also a distinguished member of MENSA and was appointed Admiral in the Texas Navy Association.
Robin was passionate about politics; he loved a political debate and could discuss it for hours. He had many friends on both sides of the aisle, but as said by a dear friend: "Robin was a true lion of the Democratic Party. For decades, any Democrat who ran for a judicial office in Texas, especially Harris County, made certain that they asked for Robin's support. They knew he had the political strength and the fundraising prowess to make a difference in their races. He did not take his respected position lightly. Throughout the election cycle, Robin spent hours and hours interviewing almost every candidate, and once he decided to endorse, he spent even more time raising money for their candidacy. There truly was a time, when most elected officials, if they were a Democrat, had Robin's number on speed dial. His counsel will be deeply missed."
He had such an interesting life. So many people shared different parts of his life that no one person could capture it all. His leadership, vision, energy, success in overlapping fields, wide range of friendships and generosity will remain a strong and guiding inspiration to those who survive him. He was a most devoted father to Kristen Hale, her husband, Greg Hale, grandchildren, Ryan, Holland, Caroline, Cameron, and Bridget Hale.
A burial service is planned for March 4th at 1:00 pm at the cemetery in Robert Lee, Texas.
