Daniel (Dan) Walker Smith, 90, passed away Friday, February 25, 2022 at Unity Point Iowa Methodist Medical Center in Des Moines, Iowa. Dan had resided at Ramsey Village, Des Moines, IA for the past 2 1/2 years and in Urbandale prior to that for more than 50 years.

Dan was born October 15, 1931, in Des Moines, Iowa to Daniel Fuller and Gladys R. (Walker) Smith. After graduation from North Des Moines High School in 1949, Dan attended Drake University and graduated in 1955 with business and law degrees.
Following college, he served as First Lieutenant in the U.S. Air Force from 1955‐1957. Dan married Lois Grace Gooder, the love of his life, on November 25, 1954 and spent 61 wonderful years together before Lois passed away in 2016. Dan cherished his family and friends more than anything else and always had a joke to pass on to others, or advice on planning for the future.

Dan began a life-long career in 1957 with Bankers Life Company, now Principal Financial Group, where he held a number of positions in the individual insurance department,
including Second Vice President-Financial Planning Support. He retired from the home office
in 1992 and began a second career as an attorney and consultant in Principal Financial Group's Des Moines Agency and Midwest Region Business Center until retiring in January 2019. Dan was a member of the Iowa and Polk County Bar Associations, a Chartered Life Underwriter, a Chartered Financial Consultant, and a Certified Financial Planner. He was also a long-time member of the Central Iowa Chapter of the Society of Financial Service Professionals.

Dan's hobbies and interests included tennis, running, chess, reading and playing bridge. He was a Drake University, University of Iowa, and Chicago Cubs fan and was thrilled when the Cubs won the World Series in 2016. Dan was a member of the First Christian Church.

Dan is survived by his sons, David D. Smith (Florie) of Des Moines, Iowa, Gregory G. Smith (Janet) of Phoenix, Arizona, Bradley B. Smith (Rebecca ) of Phoenix, Arizona, his daughter, Marsha M. Sassatelli (Mark), of Des Moines, Iowa; seven grandchildren, Shane P. Smith (Susan), Ian W. Smith, Megan N. Sassatelli and Michael J. Sassatelli, Alison C. Smith, Charles G. Smith, and Charlise R. Mason, and two great-grandchildren, Silas Smith and Lena Lois Smith. He was preceded in death by his parents, his sister, Lovena Louise Bassett, and his wife, Lois Grace Smith.

Funeral services will be held at 11 a.m. Wednesday, March 2, 2022 at Iles Westover Chapel where the family will receive friends one hour prior to the service. For those unable to attend, the memorial service will be live streamed on the Iles website.
