Rock Hill, South Carolina - Richard Fred Gardner, husband of the late Frances Cunnup Gardner, passed away peacefully on Friday, February 18, 2022, at age 98. He was a resident of Chandler Place Independent Living in Rock Hill, SC, and previously lived at Terra Bella senior community in Columbia, SC.
A graveside service will be held at 11:00 a.m. Saturday, March 5 at Laurelwood Cemetery, Stewart Avenue entrance, in Rock Hill.
Fred was born December 24, 1923 to Robert Furman Gardner and Effie Shehan Gardner. He was predeceased by his brothers, Edward Gardner and Eugene Gardner, and by his son, Robert Stephen Gardner.
Graduated from Rock Hill High in 1941, he served in the Navy during WWII on the cruiser USS Birmingham. He was financial secretary for the Textile Workers Union of America in Rock Hill, and later worked for and retired from the U.S. Department of Labor. He lived in Columbia from 1967 to 2021.
He was married August 12, 1950 to Sarah Frances Cunnup, with whom he celebrated their 70th wedding anniversary shortly before her passing. He was a caring father, devoted husband, loyal friend, avid golfer, and voracious reader.
