Helen Grace Dowless Phillips was the loving daughter of the late James Kelly Dowless and Celia Gyton Dowless born October 26, 1938 in Bladen County, North Carolina. She was a loving homemaker and the devoted wife to the late Herman Phillips.
Helen was a Godly, humble lady with a sweet, kind spirit who showed her love to all she encountered. She served as a longtime member of the Huckabee Grove Emanuel Holiness Church. She enjoyed reading her Bible, gardening and truly loved spending time with her family.
Helen completed her journey to Heaven at the age of 83 on February 12, 2022. Her legacy of love will forever be cherished by her family and loved ones.
Along with her parents and husband, she is preceded in death by a son, Dominick Vitale; brothers, Elbert Dowless, Kelly Dowless, Jr., and sister, Eunice Davis.
Helen is survived by her children, son, Ralph R. Vitale (Donna) of Stedman; daughters, Joann Locklear (Thomas) of Laurinburg, Theresa Hancock (John) of Statesville, Marie Shaw (Neill) of Wagram, Sue Bodendorf (Chuck) of Patchouge, NY; sisters, Rosa Seller and Gracie Collins both of Bladenboro, Dot Strunk of Arkansas; her grandchildren, Kelly Locklear (Nikki), Brandi McBride (Kirk), Ralph Vitale, Jr., (Ashley), Carmin Russ (Adam), Lace Powell (Jamonte), Daniel Shaw III, C.J. Bodendorf , Amanda Bodendorf, and seven great grandchildren. She also leaves behind loving nieces, nephews, a host of family and loving friends.
Funeral services will be held at 1:00 p.m. on Wednesday, February 16, 2022 at the Richard Boles Funeral Service Chapel officiated by Rev. Matthew Haynes. Burial will follow the service in Springhill Cemetery. The family will receive friends on Tuesday evening from 6:30 until 8:30 p.m. at the funeral home.
