Gene Clayton Ross, 90, of Granger, passed away peacefully at home, surrounded by family, on Monday, February 21, 2022.

Gene was born November 15, 1931 in Mishawaka to the late Floyd and Florence (Shaffer) Ross. He was a 1950 graduate of Mishawaka High School. He served his country in the US Army from 1952 to 1954. During his life he lived in South Bend, Mishawaka and Granger.

Gene married Cleo Doll on February 11, 1961 and she survives after a loving 61 years of marriage. Also surviving are three children, Mike (Kimberly) Ross, Joe Ross, and Kim (Matthew) Sharp; and five grandchildren, David, Timmy and Alyssa Sharp, and Clayton and Casey Ross.

Gene was preceded in death by two sisters, Beverly Kellems and Linda McCoy; and a brother, Kenneth Ross.

Gene was employed for 30 years as a carpenter in the shipping department at Wheelabrator-Frye Corporation. He later worked for 5 years at Penn-Harris-Madison School Corporation.

Gene was a member of Prince of Peace Church of the Brethren in South Bend. He enjoyed reading, fishing, watching and feeding the birds, yard work and working around the house. He especially liked spending time with the grandchildren. Gene and Cleo wintered for many years on Anna Maria Island in Florida.

Services honoring Gene's life and faith will be held at 12 noon on Saturday, February 26, at Goethals & Wells Funeral Home, 503 W. 3rd Street, Mishawaka, with Pastor Ken Miller Rieman officiating. Military Honors by VFW 360 / American Legion 161 Burial Squad will follow at the funeral home.

Visitation will be from 4 to 7 pm on Friday and 11 am to 12 noon on Saturday in the funeral home.

Cremation will follow the services with inurnment at a later date in a niche at Fairview Cemetery, Mishawaka.

Memorials are suggested to Center for Hospice Care or RiverBend Cancer Services.
