6694 Private B Rodgers (not Rogers as on the cemetery memorial), the Lincolnshire Regiment. He volunteered for service in South Africa during the Second Anglo Boer War. He served in the volunteer service company of the 2nd Battalion the Lincolnshire Regiment. The 2nd battalion deployed to South Africa sailing on the Goorkha about 4 Jan 1900, and arrived at the Cape about 25 Jan 1900. Along with the 2nd Norfolks, 1st King's Own Scottish Borderers and 2nd Hampshires, they formed the 14th Brigade under Brigadier General Chermside. They took part in the advance from Modder River to Bloemfontein in Feb-Mar 1900. On 29 March 1900 they fought the action of Karee Siding. Their advance North East towards Pretoria reached Brandfort on 3 May and Kroonstad on 12 May and Pretoria on 5 Jun 1900. Early in Jul 1900 the post at Silikats Nek (a pass in the Magaliesberg) was taken over from Baden-Powell's force by a squadron of the Royal Scots Greys, five companies of the Lincolnshire Regiment, and two guns O Battery, RHA, the whole under Colonel H R Roberts. On 11 Jul a strong Boer force attacked and gained possession of the pass and captured the two guns, almost an entire squadron of the Scots Greys, and 90 officers and men of the Lincolnshire Regiment, including Colonel Roberts, who had been wounded early in the day. In the later phases of the campaign the battalion furnished infantry for columns as well as doing garrison duty. In 1901 two companies were under Colonel Grenfell when he operated on the Pietersburg line. Private Rodgers died of disease at 39 Stationary Hospital, Rietfontein, Transvaal. He is also commemorated on the Lincolnshire Regiment Boer War memorial in Lincoln Cathedral, Minster Yard, Lincoln, Lincolnshire, England (see: https://www.warmemorialsonline.org.uk/memorial/254462/).
