Genealogy - published in an 1888 newspaper that was presented at the third Scofield gathering on Aug. 15, 1881.....William Scofield of this family married "Liza" Ingham, Sept. 27, 1810 and they had twelve children: Amelia, Smith W., Laura A., Patty, Catharine, Seth, Mary, John, Emeline, Ray, Marian and an infant not named.....
William Seely Scofield settled in town of Ellery about 1819-20. He followed the occupation of farming and hotel keeping, both of which proved highly remunerative. During the War of 1812 he served as first sergeant for three months at Sackett's Harbor, under the command of Captain Lewis Scott. He was a Univeraslist in his religious views, and an ardent supporter of the Democratic party. He served as postmaster of Ellery for many years.
The William Seely Scofield Tavern was located across the road and north of the J. Frank Warner house in Ellery. Ed Waterman and others lived here many years. It was replaced by the Bainbridge Colby house. This tavern was for many years the most important link between Fluvanna and Dewittville and Hartfield. Stage drivers changed horses here on regular daily trips from Jamestown to Mayville and return. This gave each double span of stage horses a round trip of half the distance between Jamestown and Mayville.
