Thomas Edward Lee, having been a part of the Stone County Home Guard, was wounded, captured by Rebel soldiers, and released when the company disbanded 13 Nov 1861. He then enlisted in the regular Army in 1862 under Capt. Ball. However while home sick on leave an episode occurred with the bushwhacker / gangster, Alf Bolin.

Calvin Cloud was shot by Alf Bolin on 10 Oct 1862, but according to the Widow's Declaration of Pension filed by Phebe Lee on 17 Feb 1880, Thomas died of Yellow Jaundice on 16th Dec 1862. Though all stories about this horrific incident of Alf Bolin at the Cloud home do state Thomas went to get help though he was sick at home, there are conflicts about his death depending on who in the family is telling the story. It does not appear that Thomas drowned in the swelling river when he went to get help that day, but rather two months later.
