Betty Ann (Millenaar) Payne was born July 16, 1932, to John and Alice (Vander Laan) Northeast of Westfield where she was raised and attended Bakker school. Following graduation from the 8Th grade in 1947 she assisted her parents with farm work and worked for many couples as a "nanny". She was a member of the Westfield and Strasburg Reformed Churches and the RCW.
Betty married Ivon Payne on November 3, 1954, at the parsonage in Westfield. They made their first home from an old schoolhouse, residing near the Missouri River west of "Red Bank" where her husband Ivon grew up. They had five children, Kevin, Louis, Cheryl, James, and Allan. In 1960 with the approaching Corp of Engineer developments, they purchased the Dade Grover Ranch. She was always providing for the needs of her family and would work tirelessly raising her children, milking cows, gardening, canning, cooking, and baking.
She moved to Strasburg in 1987. For several years Betty worked as a daycare provider in her home. She was the janitor for the Strasburg Reformed Church for many years. She was active with the Strasburg Care Center where she worked for many years as a feeder for the evening mealtime and was well known for her 30 plus years of volunteering there. She enjoyed the time she spent assisting with coffee and activities, often staying afterward to play cards with the residents. She was a proud member of the Strasburg Senior Citizens, actively attending and assisting with the activities there. She often went on bus trips with other members. When Betty's parents needed help, she welcomed them into her home to take care of them for several months. She moved to Prairie Rose Assisted Living in Linton in 2018 where she lived for nearly 3 years. Upon needing increased care, she stayed with her daughter and son-in-law for 3 months prior to entering the Strasburg Care Center in May 2021.
Betty lived her Christian faith daily in a quiet manner, she was a strong prayer warrior and always had compassion. She enjoyed sledding and playing cards and board games with her children. When she did have a few spare moments, she would crochet Christmas gifts for relatives. She loved caring for her large yard. There was always a bird bath and feeder where she might catch a glimpse of a hummingbird or her beloved bird, the cardinal. She loved to play Gin. She spent many hours working with plastic canvas and enjoyed crocheting and embroidery. When diagnosed with dementia she dove into word puzzles with a vengeance attempting to keep her mind sharp. Betty gave her best in life in a selfless and uncomplaining manner. She mourned the loss of her many friends over her last years as they passed on or moved away to be closer to their families.
She is survived by her sons Kevin (Penny) Payne; James Payne; Allan (Rae) Payne; and daughter Cheryl (Elmer) Brandner; 8 grandchildren, 2 great grandchildren and 2 step-grandchildren; two sister- in-laws Vina LaFave and Alva Payne.
She is preceded in death by her husband Ivon (1986); son Louis (2009); sisters Allene and Delma; brothers and sisters-in-law Arlow Vandenburg, Arlo Dyk, Joe LaFave, Fred and Charlotte Becker, Jack and Lorraine Shine, Rutherford and Marilyn Payne.
In lieu of flowers, the family requests donations to be made in honor of Betty at a local senior center
