Dr. Richard Arlen Collins, of Conway, passed away February 20, 2022. Born August 4, 1930 to William W. and Annie J. Collins of Shaw, MS.

After high school, Richard attended Delta State University in Mississippi, obtaining his undergraduate degree in Biology in 1953.

A Superintendent in Senath, MO asked the administration at Delta State if Richard could graduate with his current grades three weeks early so he could teach science at Senath. While teaching science at Senath, Richard met the love of his life, Barbara.

They moved to Paduka, KY to work at a nuclear plant. While in Paduka, Richard was drafted by the Army during the Korean War. He attended intelligence school in Baltimore and became a Special Agent in Army Intelligence from 1954-1956.

Richard was able to use the GI Bill to attend the University of Southern MS, where he obtained a Masters in Zoology in 1957. Subsequently they moved to Ocean Springs, MS to work at the Gulf Coast Research Lab. In 1959, he accepted a teaching position at AR State Teachers College (now UCA).

For the years 1966 - 1968 Richard took leave from UCA and moved to Carbondale, IL to obtain a Doctorate degree from the fishery program at Southern Illinois. After completing his PhD in Limnology, they moved back to Conway.

Richard was a pioneer in aqua culture, raising catfish in cages at Beaver Fork & Greers Ferry Lake. After publishing research on the topic, the United Nations Food & Agriculture Organization called and requested him to teach cage raising techniques in Hungary in 1975.

During his tenor of 36 years at UCA, Richard taught all the sciences and retired in 1994 as Director of Health Sciences.

Richard developed Round Mountain Peach Orchard in 1985. It became the largest U-pick orchard in AR until its sale in 2013. In 2001, Richard and Barbara were voted the Faulkner County Farm Family of the Year. Richard also developed Cresthaven subdivision on Round Mountain.

Richard served many years on the Arkansas State Plant Board. He was on the Conway Regional Hospital Board of Directors for 10 years and Chairman in 1991. He served on the Arkansas Arthritis Foundation Board of Directors in 1998.

Richard enjoyed running. He was an avid hunter and fisherman. And he loved Razorback sports.

He is preceded in death by his wife, Barbara Collins, daughter, Laura Bright, his siblings, Alan Collins, Virginia Mohon and Maxine Nunley and his parents.

Visitation will be on Friday February 25, 2022 from 5:00pm to 7:00pm at Roller McNutt Funeral Home. A Memorial Service will be held on Saturday February 26, 2022 at 2:00pm at Roller McNutt Funeral Home in Conway. Richard will be laid to rest at Round Mountain Cemetery.

In lieu of flowers, the family asks for donations to the Education scholarship of your choice, American Cancer Society or National Parkinson's Foundation.
