Born April 28, 1930 in Pittsylvania County he was a son of the late James Amos Rowland and Annie Shields Rowland. He was predeceased by his wife, Shirley Marie Morris Rowland; three brothers and four sisters. Mr. Rowland worked for Roadway Express for many years and then later for Campbell County Schools. He was a lifetime member of the Brushy Mountain Hunting Club where he loved skeet shooting; he also enjoyed hunting, watching NASCAR, making stew and attending his grandkids sporting events. John was a hard worker and a Jack of All Trades.
He is survived by one daughter, Katherine Phelps and significant other, William Harvey of Gretna; one sister, Patricia Carter of Altavista; two grandchildren, John Phelps and significant other, Sadie Moore of Gretna and Tiffany Satterfield and husband, Tony of Gretna; five great-grandchildren, Heather Midkiff, Chelsea Amos, Charlie Phelps, Keri Holt and Anna Holt; five great-great-grandchildren, Brantlee, Daniel, Brayden, Peyton and Bryson; and close friends and neighbors Teresa and Jr. Holt of Gretna.
Graveside services will be conducted 11:00 a.m. Friday, February 25, 2022 at Gretna Burial Park by Preston Coates.
The family will receive friends from 7 to 8:00 p.m. Thursday, February 24, 2022 at Colbert-Moran Funeral Home and other times will be at the residence.
