Emily Annie was the daughter of Lemuel (1785–1835) and Priscilla (Teasley) Rucker (1788–1846) of Elbert Co. GA

She married John Sanford Whitmire in Georgia about 1848. In 1852, she and John Sanford moved from Georgia to Neshoba County, Mississippi, shortly after his(John's) father's family. They eventually settled in the Winston county area and had nine children born to them.

Emily was living with her daughter Mary Elizabeth "Lizzie" Edwards, when she and her 13 year old granddaughter, Vida were sitting in front of a fireplace when a lightening bolt came down the chimney and hit both of them. It killed Emily and burned Vida badly. Vida wore long sleeve dresses all her life to cover up the scars. (per Rosalyn Whitmire Kelly 216115-10-1.)
