Adrian Gutierrez was arrested on suspicion of murder in the death of his 62-year-old grandmother, Diana Diaz, according to police Lt. Dan Peak.
The attack happened about 1 a.m. at a home on Melrose Avenue, just west of Interstate 805. When officers arrived, Gutierrez was standing in the living room. He then ran into a bedroom, Peak said.
Diaz was lying on the floor in another bedroom. She was unresponsive "with serious signs of trauma on her body," Peak said in a statement.
She had told a witness that her grandson had attacked her with a baseball bat, Peak said. She was taken to a hospital, where she died.
Another resident, who was not hurt, was escorted to safety, the lieutenant said.
Gutierrez was holed up in the bedroom, while armed with a knife, for about 10 to 15 minutes until officers successfully talked him into surrendering, Peak said.
Peak said Gutierrez "has suffered from past mental health issues." In an email, Peak added that police were called on two prior occasions over concerns about Gutierrez's mental health. Peak declined to share further information because Gutierrez was a juvenile at the time.
