A second child was born to Mary Ann and Thomas in 1889, another son named William Richard. Another son, Charles Harold, was born in 1909, but he might've been adopted by Mary Ann and Thomas, or he might've been the illegitimate son of Ida, whose son was born William Carter in 1910. The family were not very well off, and Thomas was constantly going into insolvency, due to illnesses in the family.

There he met Elsie Maud Mary Highland, who was the daughter of Swedish-born electrician Charles John Highland, who had built the first Automobile in Australia in the 1890s, and his wife Margaret Theresa (née Mannix). Twenty-year-old George and twenty-one year-old Elsie fell in love, and on February 28th 1908, they were married at All Souls Anglican Church in Leichhardt, Sydney. Two months later, their daughter Dulcie was born. In the next six years, George and Elsie had two more children: Alma Mary and John Henry (known as Jack). Alma was born in Sydney like Dulcie, and Jack was born in Brunswick, Melbourne.
George's brother, Alfred, broke into a house in Richmond, and was spared prison because he signed up to fight in the First World War. Sadly, Alfred was shot and Killed in Action on May 6th 1917, in France. Eleven days later, George signed up to fight, but was unable to for very long because of a lifelong heart condition. He did other war-related work in England, but then abandoned that and disappeared. He was charged with leaving His Majesty's Service and also for wife and child desertion. After a short while, George returned to his wife and children, and a second son, George Jr, was born in 1918, in Sydney. Leonard followed in 1921, Noel Vincent in 1923, and twins Alfred Jr (known as Alfie) and Lawrence (known as Laurie) in 1927, all born in Sydney. The Carters continued to live in Rozelle, Balmain and Leichhardt, mainly at Foucart Street, Rozelle.
George died on June 6th 1941, at the Balmain Hospital, Balmain of Cachexia (the general loss of weight and muscle) and Hypernephroma of the Kidney (Renal cell cancer). George was only 53. He left his wife, Elsie, to raise three of their sons; Noel (17), Alfie (13) and Laurie (13). Their eldest child, Dulcie, was aged thirty-three, and married with eleven children and counting. George was buried a day later at Field of Mars Cemetery in East Ryde, with his infant grandson, (through Dulcie), William, who had died aged three in 1930. Elsie died almost thirty years later, and was buried with her son, Alfie (who had died in 1965), a few rows beside George, her grandson and Dulcie (who had died in 1964). When George's youngest son, Laurie, died in 1987, he was buried with Elsie and Alfie, and when Laurie's wife, Dawn (née Davis), died on Christmas day in 2015, she was buried with them too.
