Our hearts were deeply saddened at the sudden passing of our beloved, William Edward "Jimmy" Gee, Jr. on Tuesday, July 4, 2017 at Southside Regional Medical Center. Jimmy was born December 1, 1956 in Petersburg, Virginia to the late William Edward Gee, Sr. and Mildred A. Johnson-Gee.
He was educated in the Petersburg Public Schools System and was a member of the Petersburg High back to back State Championship Basketball Team in 1973-1974. After graduating from Petersburg High School in 1974, he attended the University of Maryland-College Park where he was initiated into the Theta Theta Chapter of Kappa Alpha Psi Fraternity, Inc. in the Spring of 1976 and went on to earn his Bachelor of Science degree in Journalism in 1978 from the University.
He was employed with the Commonwealth of Virginia for over 37 years. His career began with Virginia State University in 1980 as the Assistant Public Affairs Director. He continued his state government service at John Tyler Community College, Virginia Department of Alcoholic Beverage Control, and returned to VSU in 1993 where he served as the Media and Public Relations Specialist for the College of Agriculture until the time of his passing.
He had a passion for his community and was a coach and mentor in the youth basketball programs at the Petersburg YMCA and the Petersburg Parks and Recreation Department for many years. Jimmy was an avid poet, photographer, self-taught bass guitar player, tennis player, swimmer, fisherman, basketball player, bicycler, writer, and a true renaissance man.
Recently he had the honor of being inducted into the Petersburg High School Athletic Hall of Fame with his teammates from the 1973-1974 basketball team. They earned 50 straight wins - one of the all time longest winning streaks in the State of Virginia High School League history for boys basketball.
Service for Mr. William E. Gee, Jr. will be held 11:00 A.M., Monday, July 10, 2017 at Tabernacle Baptist Church, 418 Halifax Street, Petersburg, Va., Rev. Dr. Robert A. Diggs, Pastor, and Pastor Arlie Lindsey, eulogist. Interment to follow at Blandford Cemetery.
