Mike grew up in Cookeville, attending Jere Whitson Elementary School, Cookeville Junior High School, and Putnam County Senior High School. Mike began working in EMS as a volunteer with the Putnam County Fire Department upon graduation from high school. Mike went on to become an EMT and later a paramedic with Putnam County EMS. After many faithful years working on an ambulance, Mike became a dispatcher for EMS, and later became the assistant 911 director and then the 911 director for Putnam County.
He was a beloved member of the Jere Whitson Road Church of Christ for many years and he served as a deacon of the congregation for a period during that time. Mike was soft-spoken, but he had a sharp sense of humor, and he loved children, especially his grandchildren. He enjoyed studying history, especially local history and ghost stories, the Kennedy administration, and the Civil War. He had a vast knowledge of trivia, especially related to music, and a deep love for his friends and family.
Those left behind to cherish his memory include his wife of thirty-four years: Kim Thompson of Cookeville; his father: Gene and his wife Martha of Cookeville; his daughter: Marissa Scott and her husband Drew of Rickman; his son: David Thompson of Soddy Daisy; his granddaughters: Emery, Avery, and Cambry Scott; sister-in-law: Beverly Gentry and her husband and his best friend Tony of Cookeville; as well as a great extended family and many other friends.
