Helen Juanita Butler of Moore, Oklahoma, was born on June 24, 1926, to Nelson Weaver McCay and Climma Tennessee McCay. On Friday, December 24, 2021, Helen passed away at the age of 95 years old.
It would be an understatement to say that Helen enjoyed golfing. She and a group of her best friends would golf at least three times a week. She loved golfing with her grandchildren, and in turn, they enjoyed staying with her and going to lunch and dinner.
Other than golfing, she enjoyed watching the Oklahoma City Thunder and the film, Dr. Zhivago. Helen was also an avid walker. Three years ago, she walked in the Hurt's Donuts 5K with five generations of her family. She also enjoyed knitting in her quiet time and knitted hats for babies in the Norman Regional Neonatal Unit.
Helen was a Methodist and attended high school in Apache, Oklahoma and graduated with the class of 1944. She made her name there as dedicated student. These were the days before everyone had a car, and when it snowed, children like Helen who grew up on distant farms were usually exempted from attendance. Regardless, she would rouse her father to hitch up the horses to take her to school. The reason for this was that Helen had perfect attendance and didn't want to spoil her record.
After leaving the farm, Helen went on to work at SouthWestern Bell. She later worked in food service for Moore Public Schools and retired after 10 years of service. In the midst of all this hard work, Helen fell in love with Frank Thomas Butler who was in the Navy, and they traveled the world together. Helen and Frank enjoyed going to the lake at Ft. Cobb where they had a boat and an RV.
Helen was straight forward and no nonsense; you always knew where she stood on issues. She was always there for her grandchildren. A hard worker and wonderful homemaker, she was a loving wife, mother, grandmother, great-grandmother, great-great-grandmother, and friend. Her greatest joy was in being with her husband, the love of her life for 67 years. She loved being with family, as well as out on the golf course. Helen touched the lives of many and will be missed deeply by all who knew her.
Helen was preceded in death by her husband, Frank Thomas Butler; granddaughters, Lauren Rebecca Butler and Chloe Helen Butler; her Mom and Dad; brother, Earl McCay; sisters-in-law, Wilma McCay and Margaret McCay. She is survived by her daughter, Rebecca Ann Brewer and her husband, Ronnie; daughter, Jane Ann Austin; son, William Thomas Butler and his wife, Lisa; son, Robert Wayne Butler; brother, Martin; 10 grandchildren; 14 great-grandchildren; and 3 great-great-grandchildren.
Funeral services will be held at 10:00 AM on Friday, January 7, 2022, at Lynlee Mae Chapel, 507 North Davis Avenue, Moore, Oklahoma. Interment will follow at Moore Cemetery, 800 SW 4th Street, Moore, Oklahoma.
