William T. Sadler was born Oct. 4, 1790 in Virginia, and died May 19, 1875in Logan Co, KY per death record age 84, b. Va., son of “William Sadler and wife”. We don’t know the details of his parents.

He was a Veteran of the War of 1812. Served as a private in Capt. John Pollocks Company, VA Militia – His pension file shows he was stationed at camp carter, near Richmond, and served from Aug. 26, 1814 to Feb. 21, 1815.

William married Martha Ann Grooms in Goochland County, VA on Aug. 6, 1816. Martha Ann was born 10 MAY 1797 in VA and died 5 OCT 1868 in Logan Co., KY. Martha was the daughter of John Grooms who died Oct. 30, 1841, Sumner County, TN. Age 74 years. Born in Virginia, and his wife Elizabeth, who died Sep. 22, 1844, Sumner County, TN age 74 years at death. Mr. and Mrs. Grooms are buried in the Stewart Cemetery, Sumner County, TN.

The 1830 census shows William Sadler living beside Martha’s aging parents, Sumner County, TN. The family includes a male 5-9, and 2 others 10-14, and one female under 5, and another 5-9.

The 1840 census shows Mr. and Mrs Grooms still in Sumner Co, but the Sadlers can no longer seen adjacent to them. I have not found where they lived in that year.

The 1850 census is the first one in which the names of all family members are listed. By that time, William and Martha ‘Saddler” were living in Logan Co, Ky with 8 children, the youngest of whom was born in Kentucky in 1844 and the others in Tennessee, between 1829 and 1838.

In 1860 only the four younger children were still in the household, and the family was recorded with a Gordonsville, KY post office.

In 1870 William (age 80) was listed as a farmer in Logan Co with real estate valued at $1,000 and other property valued at $600. Sons James (age 30) and Francis (age 27) were in the household as well as daughter Eliza P (age 34). Martha had died two years previous. William and Martha are both buried in the Doyle Cemetery, Logan County, KY.

Children shown in the 1850 census are listed below, along with what we know of their own families:

L. L. Sadler born c1829 TN (female)
(may have been the Lotsey J Sadler (1829 TN-1882) who married Joshua Sandifer on November 11, 1858, in Logan County, Kentucky and died and is buried in Vernon Co, MO.)

Sarah Sadler born c 1829 KY (born in a different state than the also 21 year old “L.L. Sadler, so apparently NOT a twin, perhaps a niece or daughter-in-law to one of the unnamed older sons shown in 1830 who were born between 1816 and 1825.

Martha Sadler born c1833 TN - more not known

Robert Sadler born c1834 TN - more not known
(1860 Robert Sadler age 27 shown as an apprentice carpenter in Gordonville, Logan Co, KY- he may have been the Robert Sadler who died of Smallpox in Bowling Green while in military service)

Eliza P. Sadler believed to be the Eliza P. Sadler (Sep 30, 1835 TN- Mar. 13, 1916) who m. 15 Jan 1874 Todd Co., KY to Launer B. Bennett

Benjamin Franklin Sadler (Sep. 22, 1837 TN-Jun. 12, 1899) m. Susan C. Page (Dec. 28. 1857 Logan Co., KY- Jul. 26, 1923 Logan Co, KY) both buried Doyle Cemetery, Logan Co, KY directly beside William and Martha.

James A. Sadler (10 Oct 1839 TN- 330 Jan 1922 Todd Co, KY) Buried Gant Cemetery, Sharon Grove, Todd County, Kentucky, married Charity A Hadden (8 Dec 1838- 17 Sep 1892) buried Grinter Cemetery, Logan County, Kentucky

(note per 1830 census, it appears there were also 3 other male children born before 1830, and one additional female child- names not known.)

Note on 4/20/2015- About 30 years ago, the William T Sadler stone was already broken and laying flat on the ground, according to Chris Yoder who had visited the site at that time. On 4/20/2015 it was found to be in further pieces, under about an inch of soil and when cleared off the top layer of stone which previously had readable Name Dates and text stating that he was a veteran of the War of 1812, had eroded away leaving nothing distinguishable. Great-great grandson Rev. William Graham of Clarksville TN is this date looking into getting a military stone from the VA or arranging to have a replacement private stone produced to replace the old marker pieces.
