Lee Ervin Smith, 84, of Morganton, passed away Saturday morning, February 19, 2022 just two days before his 85th birthday.

Lee was born February 21, 1937 in Burke County to the late Calvin Dula and Eliza Ellen Hudson Smith. He was a member of Amherst Baptist Church and served honorably in the United States Army. He grew up in Oak Hill with 8 brothers and sisters. He married his wife Mary Devinney in 1958 and had two children Susie and Danny. Lee worked at Drexel Heritage for 44 years and then worked building custom cabinets with his son Danny. Farming corn became a hobby for Lee and a way for him to spend time outside with his son. Along the way he was blessed with three granddaughters and earned the name "Pawee". Pawee's granddaughters fondly remember Friday night sleepovers that started at the fish camp or the steakhouse, led to a blockbuster movie for each of them, and often finished with their Pawee telling them silly stories. Pawee was most proud of his family and the amazing things he could build out of a few pieces of wood. He wasn't a man of many words but those close to him knew how much he loved and cared for them.

In addition to his parents, he is preceded in death by his wife, Mary Devinney Smith; and sisters, Ruby Branch and Ruth Conley.

Lee is survived by his daughter Susie Keys and husband Mark and son Danny Smith and wife Patricia, three granddaughters, Brandy (Andrew), Ashley (Daniel), and Jodie (Lucas). And three and a half great granddaughters, Ellery, Maria, Quinn, and a baby girl due in June. Also surviving is his sister, Margie; and his brothers, Ernest, Earl "Junior", Leonard "Pete", John, and Jimmy.

A private memorial service will be held by the family at Heritage Funeral Service with Rev. Al Tinnin officiating. Inurnment will follow at a later date at Burke Memorial Park Mausoleum.
