and friends by her side.
She was born to the late Orano and Pinkney Jackson on April 27, 1940, in Trenton, NJ.
Elvia earned her diploma from Trenton High School in 1958 and graduated with honors from Glassboro State College
(now Rowan) with a BA in Education in 1962. She married the late James Edward Hawkins in 1963 and
moved to Jericho, NJ, where they both spent the remainder of their days.
Elvia was an exemplary teacher for 39 years, teaching 36 years at Lake Tract Elementary School. She was
dedicated to educating her students, which led to her receiving the New Jersey Teacher of the Year
Award in 1996.
More important to Elvia than the classroom was her undying faith in Jesus Christ and her belief in His
Word. She was a faithful and devoted deaconess, Sunday School teacher, mentor, and friend to
hundreds in the community, especially young women. She was never hesitant to open her heart and her
home to those in need, whether the need was spiritual, physical, or financial. Among her favorite quotes
were, "God loves a cheerful giver", and "Only what you do for Christ will last."
In 2015, Elvia was predeceased by her loving husband James. She is survived by and was the proud
mother of three children: James, Michael, and Matthew. Predeceased by brothers William Jackson,
James Jackson, and Robert Jackson, she leaves to cherish her memory: sisters, Dr. Jeanette Purdy,
Barbara Francis (Dr. Joseph Francis), Ida Glover, and Catherine Sills (Dr. Tilson Sills), and many nieces,
nephews, cousins, and friends. The family wishes to thank everyone for their kind expressions of sympathy.
