He was the son of Adam Soelle Elrod and Sarah Owen Moore, and he served in the 7th South Carolina Regiment. He was slightly wounded at Sharpsburg on September 17, 1862 and wounded and captured at North Anna River on May 23, 1864. He was exchanged at Aiken's Landing on September 18, 1864 and was admitted sick to General Hospital #9 in Richmond on September 23, 1864. He died there on October 4, 1864 and was buried nearby in an unmarked grave in the Confederate section at Oakwood cemetery. Three brothers: George W (KIA at Gettysburg, PA), Jasper C (DOD at Manchester, VA), and Samuel Franklin (DOD at place unknown) served with him, died in 1863 as noted, and their burial places are unknown.
