Roy was a man of God, who loved his family and his country. He enlisted in the US Army in 1956 and did his basic training in Fort Jackson, South Carolina, and his technical training at Fort Sam Houston. He was stationed in Hanau, Germany. He was an ambulance driver and his division was called the "Seven Steps to Hell."
He was well known as "the fiddler." Over his lifetime he enjoyed many jam sessions with his friends and being part of many bands over the years, including The Moonriders, Horseshoe Band, and most recently The Conquerors. His love of music started at a very young age. He never learned to read music, but could pick up on a tune very quickly.
Roy also enjoyed hunting, especially coon hunting. If his grandson, Josh, wasn't available, he was happy to go with anyone willing to go. He also loved deer hunting and telling deer stories.
He was a hardworking man, working for West Mead Township as a Road Operator until his retirement in 2000. He would often work extra jobs to provide for his family. His strong work ethic is a legacy passed on to his children and grandchildren. Oftentimes you could find him on his tractor mowing his grass or picking up leaves. He loved spending time outdoors.
Roy also loved puzzles and he could spend hours working on them. He would often frame them and give them to family or friends, or he would donate them to be raffled off.
He was a diehard Cleveland Indians fan, and was waiting for them to win the World Series.
