Enlisted 12 Jan. 1862 as a private in Co. F, 15th SC INF from Union Court House, Union Co., SC. Appointed corporal 16 May. Promoted to sergeant by December. Elected brevet 2nd Lt. 15 May 1863. By October a 1st Lt. Suffered a minie ball wound to the left knee at Spotsylvania Court House 8 May 1864 and died of the wound on 25 May in a Richmond, VA hospital. He was buried in Hollywood Cemetery in Richmond. His body was exhumed and brought home to Union County, SC, where he was interred in the Steen Family graveyard with his parents (W.P.A. Project #1885: "Confederate Veterans of Union County, South Carolina Their Place of Burial."
