On January 23, 2022, Charles Lee Howell (PawPaw), a man of dignity, kindness and service to family and friends, formerly from Union Mills, IN, passed away in Houston, TX.

Charles was born to Leo and Katherine (Grage) Howell on March 5, 1927 in Union Mills, IN.

He served as a Sergeant in the U.S. Army's 82nd Airborne Division from 1945-1947. During this time, he was a Parachutist, played the trumpet in the Army band, and was also awarded the World War II Victory Ribbon.

Charles retired from Allis Chalmers, La Porte, IN.

On May 1, 1948, Charles married Edna Jean Ehrick and had 65 happy years.

He is survived by his daughters, Karen (John) Vandy, Cindy (Don) Grieger, and Carmo (David) Bos; his grandchildren, Erik Grieger, Justin (Katherine) Vandy, Lindsey (Chris) Cameron, Macey (Boris) Zilberman, and Matthew Bos; and his great-grandchildren, Jace, Cora, Tate, and Seth Vandy, Noah and Quinn Cameron, and Ayelet Zilberman; brother, David Howell; sister, Marilyn Novak; sisters-in-law, Janet Howell and Harriet Ehrick.

Charles was preceded in death by his loving wife, Edna; his parents, Leo and Katherine; his grandson, Jeffrey Vandy; and brother, Dick Howell.

A Celebration of Life and Memorial Service will be held for family and friends on Saturday, March 5, 2022, at Bethel Presbyterian Church, 110 Hamilton St., Union Mills, IN 46382. Visitation will be from 10 - 11 a.m. followed by the memorial service at the church. After the service, there will be a procession to Union Mills Cemetery, where committal and Military Honors will take place.

Memorial contributions may be directed to Bethel Presbyterian Church.
