Peter Dobson was a cotton manufacturer who emigrated to America in 1809. He built a cotton spinning mill in 1811 on the Tankeroosen River in Vernon Connecticut. He introduced a new fabric called satinet, a combination of cotton and wool cloth. His mill was located next to the present Dobson Road bridge in Vernon. The area was first called Centerville but was later named Dobsonville.
