Inez was born on April 16, 1932, in Leon, Iowa, the daughter of William Roy and Bertha Jennings McDougal. She was raised in Leon and was a 1950 graduate of Leon High School.
On December 25, 1951, she married Lloyd Arthur Smith, in Leon. The couple lived in Ames and while Lloyd served in the United States Army, they lived in Fort Sill, Oklahoma. They later returned to Leon and then lived in Farmington and Sully prior to moving to Grinnell in 1971. She had been a resident at Windsor Manor since 2011.
Inez was employed at Grinnell Re-Insurance Company for many years and also owned and operated a ceramics business from her home where she was a classroom instructor teaching ceramics. She knew the value of hard work and how to run a successful business. She was very artistic.
Inez enjoyed antiquing and was a collector of many things. She was a "country girl" at heart, enjoyed the outdoors and nature, and tending to her flower garden. She enjoyed listening to country and western music. She and Lloyd were members of the Grinnell Twirler's, a square dance group for many years. Inez loved to entertain friends and family and will be remembered for the best fried chicken and mashed potatoes. Family was everything to her and was the happiest when they visited or called.
Surviving are her two sons, Doug (Judy) Smith of Grinnell and Keith (Kim) Smith of Elk Grove, California; three grandchildren, Kyle (Andrea), Brent (Aundi), and Curtis (Kendra) Smith; five great-grandchildren; and four siblings Kenneth McDougal of Peabody, Massachusetts, Gerald (Mary) McDougal of Cameron, Missouri, Mildred Albaugh of Leon, and Loretta (Bob) Robison of St. Charles, Iowa.
She was preceded n death by her parents; her husband, Lloyd; and a brother, Charles McDougal at the age of two.
