Jim Welch, 78, longtime Waurika resident, died Thursday, May 28, 1987, in an Oklahoma City Hospital after a long illness.
Funeral services was held at 2:30 p.m. Sunday, May 31, in the First Baptist Church in Waurika with Rev. Tommy Billings officiating. Burial was in the Waurika Perpetual Care Cemetery under direction of Willis C. Worley and Sons Funeral Home in Waurika.
Jim Henry Welch, Jr. was born Feb 26, 1909 in Itasca, Hill County, Texas He grew up in Itasca and attended Rowan School in Fisher County, Texas. He came with his parents, Jim Sr., and Eliza Mae Welch. to Oklahoma in 1917, and the family settled near Madill.
On Jan 1, 1932, he married Ozuette Gay in Waurika and the couple farmed in the Beam Community east of Waurika. In 1950, the family moved to Waurika and Welch continued to work for Bill Booth Service Station until his retirement in 1971. He worked for Booth for 30 years.
Welch was a member of the First Baptist Church in Waurika.
A grandson, Jim Leland Welch preceded him in death in 1973.
Survivors include his wife, Ozuette, of Waurika; a daughter, Rrs. Red (Ruth) Ivy of Chickasha; two sons,Don Welch of Las Cruces, NM; and Patrick Welch of Duncan; four sisters, Lena Smith of Los Banos, CA., Lillian Gay of Waurika, Alline Kerr and Ruby Copeland, both of Wichita, Kansas; eight grandchildren, Janelle Powell, Paul Ivy, Pamela Bell, Susan Klunder Eric Welch, Carol Welch, Linda Welch and Sean Welch; five great-grandchildren, Brandi, Cory and Justin Powell and Nicole and Rachael Klunder.
Pall bearers were Harold, Larry, and Bruce Gay, Paul Ivy, Eric Welch, and Nelson Wirt. Honorary bears include Paul King, Percy Fulton and Bruce Stanley.
The family suggests memorials be made for heart research to the Oklahoma Medical Research Foundation, 825 Northeast 13th Street, Oklahoma City, Oklahoma, 73104.
