Gertrude (Gertie) Wollner

Oshkosh - "BINGO!"

One simple word that brings visions of Gertie Wollner to the minds of those who loved her so much. When Gertie entered heaven on January 28, her family knew she was finally at peace to rejoin loved ones that had passed on and to play card games anytime she wanted.

Gertrude (Gertie) R. Wollner lived in Oshkosh, WI, and passed away due to natural causes on January 28, 2022 while at the Beaver Dam Care Center. Gertie was preceded in death by her husband Allen J. Van Gysel, second husband Alvin P. Wollner, son Richard White, daughter in law Chris White, son in law Ray Van Gysel and son in law Ray Sill.

Gertie had five children, Richard White (Chris), Allen Van Gysel, Bruce (Patti) Van Gysel, Shelia (Ray) Sill, and Mark (Ray) Van Gysel. Gertie will be missed by her children daily.

Gertie loved spending time with her nine grandchildren and their families, and her grandchildren loved adventures with Grandma Gertie. Her grandchildren include Brent (Gina) Van Gysel, Rhonda (Craig Kolasinski) Buchanan, Heath (Jami Gross) Van Gysel, Scott Sill, Chad (Theresa) Sill, Becky Van Gysel, Jennifer Van Gysel, Janice (Josh Barker) Van Gysel and Nick (Vickie) Van Gysel. Gertie also had 19 great grandchildren, as well as 3 nieces and a nephew. Gertie also loved her time with Bonnie Perz, who was like a "bonus daughter" in Gertie's life.

Gertie was born in Rhode Island on January 13, 1924, daughter to Treffle and Alma (Gourd) Demers. After a divorce, Alma married Everette White, Gertie's stepfather to whom she was very close. Gertie had many brothers, all of whom have passed on, and a loving sister named Harriet Peterson. Harriet continues to reside out east with her family, and Gertie cherished this relationship.

Gertie married Allen J. Van Gysel on May 30, 1941. Gertie moved from Rhode Island to Milwaukee in 1944 to raise a family with Allen. Allen preceded her in death in 1976. Gertie found the next love of her life, Alvin P. Wollner, with whom she began a new chapter. Although Alvin passed away in 1991, Gertie continued to remain close to the Wollner family. The Wollners continued to be a large part of her life after Alvin's death, Gertie relished this extended family.

Throughout the time in Milwaukee, Gertie helped to support her family by working at the John Oster Manufacturing Company until her retirement in 1989. Gertie eventually moved north to reside in Omro, WI, where she developed many friendships with whom she enjoyed spending time playing cards. Gertie also loved the time she spent helping out at her son Allen's restaurant, the Omro Main Street Restaurant. Gertie eventually moved to Oshkosh, WI. Her final home was Simeanna 3 Apartment where, in true Gertie fashion, she continued to have fun with the friends she made at her apartment complex. Gertie was blessed to have her son, Bruce, in the same building. Daily, Bruce would check in with her and always brought along his furry friend. Gertie always had a treat to share and enjoyed these visits each day.

Gertie, also known as Rhode Island Red, loved to socialize with friends and family, and would always make new friends wherever she went. Her various activities with her cherished friends included bowling leagues, roller skating (til she was in her 50s), and Friday night dancing with friends. Gertie loved to jitterbug and was still dancing to the music at her 80th birthday party.

Gertie loved to play card games, slot machines at the casino, and for the longest time she spent every Sunday playing BINGO in Green Bay. Gertie cared deeply about animals and would smile from ear to ear anytime a furry friend came to sit on her lap. She even named her own cat BINGO after her favorite hobby! Gertie had a sweet tooth and seemed to live on sugar. She could often be found eating marshmallow fluff by the spoonful, snacking on maple nut fudge, and her favorite treat was her daughter Sheila's famous sugar cookies that Shelia baked for Gertie every month.

Gertie was mischievous, sassy and always ready to have fun. She loved to go on the annual Friends and Family Road Trip, and participate in the many adventures of the road trip stops along the way planned by her grandchildren Rhonda and Brent. Of course, the end of each day's adventure brought the group together at a casino to gamble with Grandma Gertie.

Gertie was simply an amazing woman. She was fiercely proud, feisty and independent. She lived independently in Oshkosh just short of her 98th birthday. She will be missed terribly by all who were fortunate to call her their Wife, Mom, Grandma, Great Grandma, Sister, Auntie and Friend. She taught us all so many lessons and will continue to pass on her zest for life in all who knew her.

Rest in peace, Gertie. May God call your BINGO numbers in heaven daily, and may this final road trip be the best yet.

At Gertie's request, there will be no funeral or memorial service. Instead, due to her passion for life and having fun, an intimate celebration of life will take place with close family. To remember Gertie, mark your calendar for Gertie's birthday on January 13. On this day, honor her memory by participating in one of her favorite pastimes….you know she will be there smiling with you!
