Born in Wilmot Township, Josiah was a son of Moses Biehn/Bean and his second wife, Sophia Schultz. Moses died when Josiah was one or two years old.

Josiah is listed as Joshua (age 3) in the 1871 Census of Canada, and as Joseph (age 14) in the 1881 census. Both records show that he lived with his mother, Sophia Bean, in Wilmot Township.

A death record reveals that Josiah was an artist. He died from bronchopneumonia at St. Michael's Hospital, Toronto, on March 17, 1926, at the age of 58 years. He was buried in Mount Pleasant Cemetery on March 23.
