He worked for Collins Radio for many years and got to travel many places all over the world. He once started his own garage in Garland, where he worked on cars. He then left that business and went to work in the oil fields with his father doing drilling and completion and some consulting. After retiring, he did repairs and remodels on homes.

J.D. loved to help others. He worked on many cars for family and friends. He loved to go exploring with his metal detectors to find buried treasures. He loved to fish, garden, and spend time with his friends Oren and Linda Northcutt and Joe and Carla Fisher. He loved to sit on his back patio and visit with his daughter-in-law, Lorretta Richards. He loved his granddaughters Amber Chapman and Christian Page very much, and was always tickled to talk and laugh with his great-granddaughters Brenleigh and Paisley Hines. He had many nieces and nephews from all around the country that he loved dearly.
