Appears on Lakeside Advent Christian Campmeeting Association Committee in 1892. One of the incorporators in 1893. In charge of the Boarding Dept. in 1898 with S. W. Carr. 1898 for purchase of lumber address C. H. Morrill [sic] Dover, South Mills, Me. By 1912, Treasurer.
The Mill at Dover South Mills:
CL Merrill bought in the fall of 1881 of Sam Withee, Bion Withee's father. The mill burned 2 Dec 1890, having caught fire from Pratt's mill, near Henry Bell's place. The fire was after dinner and before dark the pond was empty. There was no insurance. The Pratts were forced to remove their mill before Grampie would rebuild. It was rebuilt in the summer of 1891, the lumber for it being sawn at Gilman's Mill in Dover, and sold to his sons in 1904. The four oldest boys worked with their father in the mill. The mill was torn down about 1939. --recollections of Arthur W. Merrill.

Charles L. Merrill, the oldest resident of the Dover side of this town, died August 19 at the home of his son, Charles A. Merrill, as the result of paralysis with which he was stricken the previous Tuesday. Mr. Merrill's age was 92 years and three months and up to the time of his last illness he was in remarkable health. On the day on which he was stricken he came to this village with his son Charles and had dinner with a grandson, Omar B. Merrill, returning to his home and eating supper as usual, sitting down in his chair then and going to sleep. On August 12 he had gone on a blueberrying trip to Beddington, a distance of 80 miles, with his son[s] Charles, Stanley and Guy and great-grandson, Dwight, standing the trip nicely and picking a few berries.
Mr. Merrill was the son of True and Sally (Low) Merrill and was the last of a family of eight children. In early manhood he spent a short time in the west [Minnesota?], but the majority of his life had been spent in this town where he was prominently connected with the settlement known as Dover South Mills, where for nearly 50 years he operated a sawmill which business is now being carried on by his sons.
Mr. Merrill was twice married, his first wife being Mrs. Belle W. Bray of Garland whose death occurred in 1920. To them were born seven children, Charles A., Ernest F., Guy S., Arthur W. and Stanley E., of this town, Harry of West Orange, N. J., and Marion (Mrs. William Fairbrother) of Augusta. Besides these Mr. Merrill is survived by 25 grandchildren and 11 great-grandchildren. Nieces and nephews surviving include Mrs. Cora Sands, Mrs. Mary Demeritt and Walter Burgess of this town, Mrs. Minnie Bailey of Sangerville, Dr. Frank Burgess of Dexter and William Bachelder of Garland.
Funeral services were held Monday afternoon at the home of Chas. A. Merrill, being conducted by Rev. M. H. LeGrow of the Advent Christian Church with which the Merrill family have long been prominently identified. The bearers were the four oldest sons and burial was in the family lot at Dover South Mills.
