Ervin was the youngest child of Joseph Crocker Ewers and Adelia L. Harford. Ervin's birth record in Ingham County gives his birth date as September 16, 1874. The State of Michigan records it as September 11, 1875 (the year a mistake as it was not recorded until over a year later). Family bibles record the date as either September 13 or 18, 1874. He gave the date as September 13, 1874 on his WWI draft card, so this is probably the correct date. He was named Roscoe E. Ewers at birth, but later switched his name around to Ervin Roscoe.

Ervin was married to Agnes, daughter of Phillip and Jane (Fay) Heeney, on September 25, 1901, in Bunker Hill by John J. Connally, Catholic Priest. Witnesses were William Spencer of Salem and Miss Clinton of Jackson.

Ervin is said to have been very intelligent, and he taught school for awhile as a young man. Ervin was a carpenter in addition to being a farmer. He also played the "fiddle", and would often play for dances on Saturday nights at neighbor's homes.

Ervin and Agnes raised their family in a home built on property formerly owned by Ervin's father, located on Ewers Road just west of Williamston Road in Bunker Hill. In their later years Ervin and Agnes gave up their farm and moved to a home in nearby Fitchburg. Their house in Bunker Hill is now long gone, and the property is part of the Dansville State Game Area.

Ervin and Agnes Ewers were the parents of: Merlin Phillip, m. Anna Wilson; Alva James; Mary Agnes; Alice Frances, m. Merlyn "Paul" Stanfield; Raymond Joseph "Joe", m. Kathleen Evelyn Barr; Leo Edward, m. Althea G. "Sue" Kilbourn; Louis Anthony m. Ruth Kathleen McClear; Anna Gladys m. Leon Lockwood; Emmett Aloysius. Ervin and Agnes also lost two babies that are buried in unmarked graves in this cemetery - one a still born twin of their son Joe, the other a premature born daughter.

Ervin died suddenly during the early morning hours, and the doctor stated the cause of death was probably cerebral hemorage (stroke). The following is from a newspaper obituary, the name and date of the paper not available (probably from the "Jackson Citizen Patriot"):

"Ewers, Ervin R. - Passed away suddenly Saturday morning at his home in Fitchburg, age 72 years. He is survived by his wife, Agnes and six sons: Merlin, Alva and Louis, all of Jackson; Corp. Joseph of Enid, Oklahoma; Leo of Grass Lake; BUM 2-C Emmett of the U.S. Navy; two daughters, Mrs. Paul Stanfield of Jackson, Mrs. Leon Lockwood of Grass Lake; eight grandchildren; one brother, Ed Ewers of Owosso. Mr. Ewers is at the Milner funeral home until Sunday afternoon, when he will be taken to his home in Fitchburg. Funeral services Tuesday at 10 a.m. from the SS. Cornelius and Cyprian church at Bunker Hill. Interment at the church cemetery."
